Prop Firm Leverage & Margin Usage Restrictions (2026)

The hidden rules that can void a payout even when your drawdown is green: margin caps, notional volume limits, dynamic leverage tiers, and position-sizing rules across every major firm.

✍️ PropFirmStats Editorial Team📅 October 2026⏱️ 12 min read

Ask a room of prop traders what will end their funded account, and almost everyone says the same thing: the daily drawdown. And they're right — mostly. But there's a second layer of restrictions that rarely makes it into YouTube reviews, yet can quietly void a payout even when every drawdown limit is green: leverage ceilings, margin usage caps, notional exposure limits, and position-sizing rules.

Some firms publish them in account specifications. Some bury them in terms and conditions. Some only reveal them at payout review. 2026 has seen major movement: FundedNext removed its 70% margin rule but kept a hard risk limit that permanently halves your risk budget on a second violation, Think Capital introduced tiered Dynamic Leverage, and Finotive enforces a notional exposure cap that cuts your next payout to 10% when breached.

We went through the official rulebooks, help centers, and account specifications of every firm we track. Here's the complete picture — firm by firm.

Three Different Rules Traders Constantly Confuse

You can be perfectly inside your drawdown limits and still breach a margin or exposure rule — most are checked when you request a payout, not tick-by-tick.

Leverage Ceiling

The maximum ratio the platform lets you control per instrument (FX 1:100, Crypto 1:2). Static at most firms — Think Capital now tiers it dynamically by position size.

Margin Usage Cap

The maximum share of your account committed as margin — total (IcFunded: 75%), per instrument (PropXP: 25%), or as total notional exposure (Finotive: 1,000%–5,000% by account size).

Position-Sizing Rule

Restrictions on lot sizes or trade counts: hard lot caps (FundingPips: 20 lots), consistency bands (TTT Markets), or per-idea exposure caps (SpiceProp).

Firms With Hard Margin & Exposure Caps

PropXP

25% Max Margin Rule

No more than 25% of account size as margin on a single instrument — single trade OR combined simultaneous positions.

  • $100K account = $25K max margin on any one instrument
  • Caps: $3K=$750 · $10K=$2.5K · $25K=$6.25K · $50K=$12.5K · $100K=$25K · $200K=$50K
  • Applies to 1-Step, 2-Step, Instant Funding AND funded accounts
  • Not a fixed lot limit: max lots = permitted margin ÷ margin-per-lot (MT5 → Specifications)
  • Funded/instant leverage: FX 1:50 · Metals/Indices 1:25 · Crypto 1:2 · Stocks 1:10

Breaches are 'Important' violations — below drawdown breaches, but the 25% cap leaves little room for interpretation. Keep a buffer below the cap: floating losses push live usage up in real time.

IcFunded

75% Max Margin Exposure

Instant Funding accounts: total margin exposure capped at 75% of the account, plus 1.5% risk per trading idea (real-time balance).

  • No mandatory stop-loss on the instant program
  • Instrument leverage (2-Step Professional): FX 1:50 · Indices/Commodities 1:20 · Crypto 1:2
  • 10-minute news cool-off on funded accounts

Enforced via the risk-per-idea framework on the instant program.

FundedNext

70% Rule Removed → 3% Risk Limit

Removed its 70% margin usage rule in 2026 — evaluations run 1:100 with no lot-size limit, while funded accounts run 1:50 leverage where the hard 3% risk limit is the binding constraint.

  • Leverage: 1:100 on evaluations · 1:50 on funded accounts
  • Risk = max potential loss (realized + floating, all trades) vs initial balance, based on stop-loss placement
  • All orders on the same trading idea count together, even if split into entries
  • 1st violation: formal warning + 100% of violating-trade profit deducted
  • 2nd violation: account permanently reclassified to a 1% max risk budget — survives account merges
  • Recommends 20–30% margin usage; overuse can be flagged as risky behaviour
  • Monthly competition accounts only: max 5 positions, 5 lots FX, 3 lots indices/commodities

Warning → profit deduction → permanent 1% risk reclassification.

Finotive Funding

Notional Volume Limit

Total notional value of ALL open positions is capped relative to balance — effectively a 100:1 total-exposure ceiling that tightens as your account grows.

  • $2.5K = 5,000% ($125K max exposure) · $5K = 4,000% ($200K)
  • $10K = 3,000% ($300K) · $25K = 2,500% ($625K) · $50K = 2,000% ($1M)
  • $100K = 1,250% ($1.25M) · $200K = 1,000% ($2M)
  • Dashboard shows a live Notional Volume Calculator with your remaining room
  • Strike history is cleared when you reach funded status — a clean slate
  • Leverage: 1:100 on Challenge/Pro plans; Instant Standard/Lite runs 1:33

Each breach = a strike. Challenge phase: account must return to positive balance before reset. Funded phase: your next payout is cut to 10%.

SpiceProp

2% Risk Per Trading Idea

On funded accounts, total risk on a single trading idea (all positions, same instrument + direction, combined) must not exceed 2% of account equity at entry.

  • Two half-size entries on the same instrument = one idea, not two half-risks
  • Evaluation phases unaffected — activates on funded accounts
  • Pairs with the no-weekend-holding policy

Violations can restrict or delay payouts.

Think Capital's Dynamic Leverage: The Only Tiered System in Prop

Think Capital does something no other firm we track does: instead of one static leverage number, leverage scales down as your position size grows. Margin is calculated progressively per tier — each portion of your trade gets its own rate. A 12-lot GBPUSD position pays 1:100 on the first 5 lots, 1:50 on the next 5, and 1:30 on the last 2 — a total of $21,667 margin on a position that would need just $12,000 at a flat 1:100.

Asset ClassLeverage Tiers (by open lot size)
Forex (e.g. GBPUSD)0–5 lots: 1:100 · 5–10: 1:50 · 10–15: 1:30 · 15–20: 1:15 · 20+: 1:10
Gold (XAUUSD)0–0.50 lots: 1:30 · 0.50–1.0: 1:10 · 1.0–1.25: 1:5 · 1.26–1.51: 1:3 · 1.51+: 1:2
Indices (US30)0–8 lots: 1:20 · 8–16: 1:10 · 16+: 1:5
Indices (SPX)0–3 lots: 1:20 · 3–6: 1:10 · 6+: 1:5
Oil (WTI)0–3 lots: 1:20 · 3–6: 1:10 · 6+: 1:5
Crypto (BTCUSD)0–0.10 lots: 1:2 · 0.11+: 1:1

The Lightning program (challenge and funded) runs static, conservative leverage instead: FX 1:30, Indices 1:5, Gold/Silver 1:10, Oil 1:10, Crypto 1:1. And Think Capital's FAQ is explicit on lot limits: "There is no restriction on lot size" — the dynamic tiers themselves are the sizing control. Gold traders take note: beyond 1.5 lots, leverage drops to 1:2 and margin requirements explode.

Position-Sizing Rules: Caps and Consistency Traps

FundingPips

20-Lot Max Per Trade

A hard lot-size limit of 20 lots maximum per click/trade on challenge accounts.

Per-instrument leverage is otherwise generous: FX 1:100, Metals 1:30, Indices 1:20, Energies 1:10, Crypto 1:2. FundingPips' live-capital PRIME product is the industry outlier with leverage up to 1:2000 — a different risk model entirely. No margin-usage cap beyond the platform's own margin math.

TTT Markets

Lot Consistency + Stacking

Lot-size consistency: 25%–200% of your own average lot size; max 2 trades per direction.

Your average is calculated from total trading activity and checked at payout time — you can be profitable all month and still fail the check. A third position in the same direction is a breach.

Two different philosophies here: hard caps (FundingPips) stop the oversized trade at the platform; consistency rules (TTT) enforce behavioural discipline and only surface at payout review.

The 11 Most-Traded Firms: Quick Reference

The firms our readers trade most — leverage, margin/position rules, and the one thing to watch on each.

FTMO
1:100 Standard · 1:30 Swing

No margin cap or lot limit; Standard leverage cannot be increased. Margin is calculated per side on hedged positions.

Swing accounts: 1:30 FX makes large positions margin-hungry fast.

FundingPips
FX 1:100 · Metals 1:30 · Indices 1:20

20-lot max per trade; no margin-usage cap.

PRIME (live capital) runs up to 1:2000 — don't confuse it with challenge accounts.

Think Capital
Up to 1:100 (tiered) · Lightning 1:30 FX

Dynamic Leverage on Dual Step/Nexus/Bolt: leverage scales down as lot size grows. No lot-size restriction.

Gold beyond 1.5 lots drops to 1:2 leverage — margin cost explodes.

Evercrest Funding
1:100 challenges · ~1:30 Instant Plus

No hard margin cap; T&Cs require 'responsible and controlled use of margin and leverage at all times'.

Soft language, but it's the hook for discretionary payout reviews.

PropXP
FX 1:50 funded · 1:100 challenge

25% of account as margin per instrument — strictest published cap.

Stacked positions on one instrument all count toward the same cap.

FundedNext
1:100 eval · 1:50 funded

70% margin rule removed (2026); hard 3% risk limit on funded accounts instead.

2nd violation = permanent 1% risk budget. It survives account merges.

E8 Markets
FX 1:30 (One/Pro)

No published margin cap; one of the lowest FX leverage ceilings among major firms.

Pairs with the 40% consistency rule — conservative by design.

Funded Trading Plus
Account leverage 1:30

No fixed lot cap — position size is margin-bound (size × leverage ÷ asset value). Risk Review Policy covers abnormal margin use.

Manual margin formula is published in their help center — use it before big trades.

Blue Guardian
FX 1:50 (Crypto 1:100)

No published margin or lot restrictions; governed by drawdown limits.

Lower FX leverage than most — size positions off margin, not habit.

IcFunded
FX 1:50 · Indices/Commodities 1:20

Instant Funding: 75% max margin exposure + 1.5% risk per trading idea.

One of the few firms with an explicit total-margin number.

BrightFunded
FX 1:100

No hard margin cap — 'no hidden rules' philosophy: risk governed by daily/max loss limits only.

Firm recommends 0.5–1% risk per trade as best practice; overleveraging invites review.

Full Leverage Table: Every Firm We Track

The pattern is clear: 1:100 is the ceiling almost everywhere, and several firms deliberately cut well below it. The closer you get to real payouts, the more the firm wants position sizes it can actually underwrite.

Estimates for planning only. Contract sizes, exact margin rates, and dynamic-tier boundaries vary by platform — always confirm in your MT5/ThinkTrader symbol specifications and the firm's current terms. Leverage values verified against official sources, October 2026; evaluation vs funded stage distinctions apply where firms publish different values.

Firms With No Formal Margin or Position Restrictions

FTMO, BrightFunded, The5ers, Blue Guardian, EverTrader, MyFundedCapital, FundingRock, TradersYard, Tradexprop, Maven and most of the rest of the field publish no margin usage cap and no lot-size limit — position size is governed indirectly through drawdown limits and platform leverage. Two caveats:

"Not published" ≠ "not enforced"

Firms reserve the right to review abnormally large positions at payout. FundedNext flags margin overuse explicitly; Evercrest's T&Cs require "responsible and controlled use of margin and leverage at all times."

Platform specifications still apply

Your max lot is always bounded by available margin at the platform's leverage — the MT5/ThinkTrader symbol specifications are the real limit on any account.

A Margin Game Plan That Survives Every Firm

1
Budget margin like drawdown

If you wouldn't risk 25% of the account on one idea, don't margin it on one instrument. PropXP's 25% cap is a sensible ceiling to adopt at any firm.

2
Compute max lots per instrument, before the session

Max lots = margin budget ÷ margin-per-lot. Crypto at 1:2 leverage consumes margin ~25x faster than FX at 1:50.

3
Count stacked positions as one idea

SpiceProp and FundedNext aggregate same-direction entries; Finotive sums ALL open positions toward its notional cap. Two half-size entries are one full-size risk.

4
Leave a 20% buffer under any cap

Floating losses increase margin usage in real time. A position opened at 24% can sit at 26% while you sleep.

5
Check the plan, not the firm

The same firm runs different leverage per product: Think Capital 1:100 tiered vs Lightning 1:30, Finotive 1:100 vs Instant 1:33, FundedNext 1:100 evaluation vs 1:50 funded, OFP 1:100 vs Instant Pro 1:30. Verify your account type before sizing up.

6
Keep lot sizes within a band

TTT-style 25–200% consistency bands are spreading, and FundingPips hard-caps at 20 lots. 0.5 lots all month then a 20-lot NFP Friday is a payout risk anywhere with discretionary review.

The Bottom Line

Leverage and margin rules are the quiet layer of prop firm risk management — invisible until the moment they matter. The 2026 landscape cuts three ways: loosening (FundedNext removed its margin cap), tightening (its 3% risk limit, Finotive's payout-cutting notional strikes), and engineering (Think Capital's dynamic tiers that price oversized positions out of existence).

Before your next challenge purchase, check two numbers on this page: the FX leverage on your specific plan, and whether the firm has a margin, exposure, or position cap at all. It takes two minutes — and it's the cheapest payout insurance you'll ever get.
